Data and facts on the export potential of Austrian machinery and equipment for the Polish and Romanian food, beverage and tobacco industry
ETECH CONSULT, a fully consolidated consulting subsidiary of Investkredit Bank AG specialising in technology, market issues and subsidies, has prepared a market survey on behalf of Oesterreichische Kontrollbank AG (OeKB) entitled “Food, beverage and tobacco industry in Poland and Romania – Export potential of machinery and equipment manufactured by Austrian companies”. The survey focussed on collecting industry data and facts in Poland and Romania, and is aimed at offering Austrian companies an easily available, compact overview.
Despite all the differences, Poland and Romania are promising export markets for Austrian companies.
Poland is the largest foodstuff manufacturer among the new EU member states. Around EUR 24.17 bn worth of foodstuffs and agricultural products were sold in 2004. The Polish market for machinery and equipment for the food, beverage and tobacco industry was worth around EUR 193.4 m. Among the EU´s new member states, Poland ranks fourth in Austrian exports and imports, and is becoming an increasingly interesting economic partner for Austria.
Romania is one of the countries with the highest rate of economic growth in Europe, and is – after Poland – the second-largest market in Central and Eastern Europe. The Romanian food, beverage and tobacco industry is one of the most important industries of the Romanian economy (4.6% share of GDP). The Romanian market for machinery and equipment for the food, beverage and tobacco industry generated sales of around EUR 22.5 m in 2004. The import of second-hand machinery also plays an important role. Austria was the largest foreign investor in Romania in 2004. This assessment can be primarily traced to the purchase of oil company Petrom by OMV.
Target groups of the market survey are Austrian companies in the area of machinery and equipment for the food, beverage and tobacco industry which are interested in the Polish and/or Romanian market. The survey was financed by money from the fund for surveys of market development.
